We recommend opting for the Shinkansen, the high-speed train. It is the fastest and most efficient mode of transport to connect these two cities. Nozomi, Hikari, and Kodama trains run frequently on the Tokaido Shinkansen line. Nozomi trains are the fastest as they make fewer stops, followed by Hikari, and then Kodama trains which stop at every station.

The cost of a Shinkansen ticket between Nagoya and Shin-Osaka includes the basic fare and the express train surcharge. For a non-reserved seat, the price is generally around 6,800 yen. For a reserved seat, the fare varies between 7,500 and 8,000 yen for Hikari or Kodama trains, and slightly more for the Nozomi, ranging from 8,500 to 9,000 yen. These prices may vary depending on the season and day of the week.

The Shinkansen journey duration between Nagoya and Shin-Osaka depends on the type of train chosen:
With a Nozomi Shinkansen, the journey takes approximately 50 to 55 minutes.
With a Hikari Shinkansen, the trip generally lasts 60 to 70 minutes.
With a Kodama Shinkansen, you should allow approximately 90 to 100 minutes.

Traditionally, the Japan Rail Pass does not allow direct use of Nozomi Shinkansen without additional fees. It fully covers journeys on Hikari and Kodama Shinkansen on the same line.
Since October 2023, it is possible to use Nozomi trains with a JR Pass, but this requires purchasing a specific supplementary ticket ("Nozomi Japan Rail Pass Ticket") in addition to the pass. This supplementary ticket must be purchased before boarding, and its cost depends on the distance traveled. We advise travelers with a JR Pass to prioritize Hikari or Kodama trains to avoid additional fees.
