Ticket - Train - Tokyo - Takayama

We mainly recommend two options for traveling to Matsumoto from Tokyo: train or bus.
The Limited Express Azusa train is the fastest and most comfortable way. It directly connects Shinjuku Station (and some trains depart from Tokyo Station) to Matsumoto. The journey takes approximately 2 hours 40 minutes to 3 hours.
Long-distance buses offer a more economical alternative. They mainly depart from the Shinjuku Bus Terminal (Busta Shinjuku).

For a one-way trip between Shinjuku and Matsumoto aboard the Limited Express Azusa, the ticket cost varies.
An unreserved seat generally costs around 6,620 yen. For a reserved seat, the price is approximately 6,900 to 7,500 yen, including the base fare and express surcharge. These fares may slightly vary depending on the time of year. Japan Rail Pass holders can use it for this trip at no extra cost.

The bus journey from Tokyo (Shinjuku) to Matsumoto generally takes between 3 hours 30 minutes and 4 hours. The exact duration depends on traffic and the bus company. It is a longer option than the train but often more economical.

Shinjuku Station is the most convenient and frequently used departure station for Limited Express Azusa trains heading to Matsumoto. Most Azusa trains depart from Shinjuku, offering better departure frequency.
A limited number of Azusa trains also depart from Tokyo Station, which can be an option if your initial starting point in the city is closer to this station or if you are arriving by Shinkansen. However, for most travelers, Shinjuku is the most direct and simplest choice.
