The most efficient way to travel from Shinagawa to Kyoto is by Shinkansen, Japan's high-speed train. Shinagawa Station is a major stop on the Tokaido Shinkansen line.
We recommend choosing Nozomi, Hikari, or Kodama trains. The Nozomi is the fastest, completing the journey in approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes to 2 hours and 30 minutes. The Hikari takes a bit longer, stopping at more stations, while the Kodama is the slowest, stopping at all stations.
Tickets can be purchased at JR ticket offices ('Midori no Madoguchi'), automatic ticket vending machines, or online. It is recommended to reserve your seat, especially if you are traveling during peak periods or with bulky luggage.

The cost of a Shinkansen ticket from Shinagawa to Kyoto varies depending on the seat type and train.
Generally, a one-way unreserved seat ticket for a Nozomi train costs approximately 13,320 JPY. A reserved seat in an Ordinary Car costs around 13,850 JPY, and a Green Car (first class) seat is approximately 18,500 JPY.
These prices are indicative and may vary slightly. Please note that the Japan Rail Pass does not cover Nozomi trains; for pass holders, Hikari or Kodama trains are included.

The Shinkansen travel time between Shinagawa and Kyoto is very similar to that from Tokyo Station. Shinagawa Station is the first station after Tokyo on the Tokaido Shinkansen line heading towards Kyoto.
The travel time from Shinagawa is generally 5 to 10 minutes shorter than from Tokyo Station, as Shinagawa is one stop closer to Kyoto. However, the time saved is often negligible for most travelers.
The advantage of Shinagawa may lie in its easier access from certain areas of Tokyo, or if you are arriving directly from Haneda Airport via the Keikyu line. Additionally, Shinagawa's platforms can sometimes be less crowded than those at Tokyo Station, making boarding easier.

You'll find takeout sushi, ramen, udon, as well as traditional bentos and regional specialties to enjoy aboard your Shinkansen. Convenience stores like 7-Eleven or FamilyMart are also present for quick snacks and drinks.
We recommend locating these dining areas on a station map, as Shinagawa is a large station.
