Set along the tranquil Takasegawa River, our thoughtfully restored townhouse is a peaceful escape for two in the heart of Kyoto. Once a vital trade canal used to transport sake, rice, and textiles through the city, the Takasegawa still flows quietly between wooden homes and stone paths — a reminder of Kyoto’s living history.

Description of the house

Just steps from the city’s liveliest shopping and dining districts, the house offers the rare charm of a quiet waterfront setting with the convenience of a central location.

Designed by award-winning architects and meticulously restored through a slow, craft-driven process by Kyoto artisans specializing in machiya renovation, our house brings together authentic materials and a clean, timeless design. It was also carefully upgraded to be comfortable year-round, with underfloor heating on both levels, modern insulation, triple-glazed windows — and of course, heaters and air conditioning throughout.

The house features one serene bedroom on the second floor, a well-appointed bathroom, a fully equipped kitchen, and open living and dining spaces overlooking the canal on the ground floor — an ideal base for couples or solo travelers seeking privacy and calm.

This home complements our small collection of carefully restored Kyoto townhouses, all consistently highly rated by guests. Whether you're staying a few nights or settling in for longer, our house by the Takasegawa River offers a quiet and comfortable place to experience Kyoto at your own pace.

The neighborhood
The house is nestled in the small side streets along Takasegawa canal, tucked away behind Kyoto's shopping streets of Shijo and Karasuma. With the historic district of Gion being just a short walk away as well, Takasegawa House is located right in the heart of Kyoto.

House Rules
We sincerely apologize in advance for having to be a little strict.

1) No early check-in. No late check out.
Check-in is from 15:00. Check-out at 10:00.

2) As a licensed accommodation, we are required by law to register our guests, if you could please fill up the provided form at check-in and send us a copy.

3) Smoking is strictly prohibited on the property. For safety reasons, guests cannot smoke in the house, garden, entrance area, or anywhere within the building and property grounds. We reserve the right to cancel bookings in case of violation, and an additional cleaning fee of USD 400 may be charged to remove the smell of smoke from the house.

4) We kindly ask that the house be left in a reasonable order at check-out, as a common courtesy to our cleaning staff, even if we charge a cleaning fee. We reserve the right to charge an additional cleaning fee if the state of the house requires it.

5) We recycle our trash in Kyoto, and we kindly ask for your help. Please only leave your refuse bags in the area where the dumpsters are located, and never ever leave your trash bags in the streets, even if you see our neighbours doing so.

6) Please remove your shoes at all times when inside the house.

7) By accepting the rental, our guests agree to release us from all liability, including any and all liability for personal and fatal injuries, or damage and loss of personal belongings.

Shinagawa was historically the first of the 53 stations along the Tokaido, the main route connecting Edo (present-day Tokyo) to Kyoto during the Edo period. Its strategic location made it an essential commercial and military transit point. Today, Shinagawa Station continues to be a vital transportation hub, serving numerous railway lines, including the Shinkansen, while preserving traces of its historical past along the ancient route.

Frequently asked questions

AnsweShinagawa offers strategic advantages depending on the traveler's itinerary. For access to Haneda Airport, the Keikyu Line from Shinagawa is a direct and efficient option. For connections to southern regions like Yokohama or the Kansai area via Shinkansen, Shinagawa can help avoid the crowds at Tokyo Station, which is larger and often busier. We recommend Shinagawa for potentially smoother Shinkansen transfers or for direct access to Tokyo's southwestern districts.

AnsweThe journey between Tokyo Station and Shinagawa Station is direct and frequent. Several JR lines can take you there:
JR Yamanote Line: Approximately 7 to 10 minutes.
JR Keihin-Tohoku Line: Approximately 7 to 10 minutes (rapid and local services).
JR Tokaido Line: Approximately 6 to 7 minutes.
JR Ueno-Tokyo Line: Approximately 6 to 7 minutes.
These lines offer very regular departures. Tickets typically cost between 140 and 170 yen.

AnsweYes, Shinagawa Station is a major stop for the Shinkansen. All Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen trains, including Nozomi, Hikari, and Kodama services, stop at Shinagawa. This makes it a convenient departure or transfer point for travelers heading to Kyoto, Osaka, Nagoya, and beyond, or arriving from these destinations.

AnsweThe journey time between Tokyo Station and Shinagawa Station is generally short.
Using local JR lines (Yamanote, Keihin-Tohoku, Tokaido, Ueno-Tokyo), the trip takes between 6 and 10 minutes, depending on the chosen line and the availability of rapid services.
By Shinkansen, the duration is even shorter, typically 3 to 5 minutes for a direct stop between these two stations. However, we recommend using local JR lines for this specific route due to their frequency and cost, as the Shinkansen is generally used for longer distances.
